Experience gifts for grandparents

Most grandparents would rather have an afternoon than an object. Here are experience gifts they’ll actually enjoy, including one that leaves the whole family with something to keep.

Why grandparents would rather have time than things

Ask most grandparents what they want and the answer is some version of “just to see you all”. They’re not being polite. Time with family, feeling listened to and having something to look forward to matter far more to them than another present.

That’s what makes an experience gift work. The best ones have three things in common. They’re easy for them to enjoy, without long journeys or early starts. Someone they love is part of it. And they leave a memory behind.

Our experience

An afternoon telling their life story

A Memory Room session is a relaxed, guided conversation about their life. Where they grew up. How they met. The jobs, the houses, the people, the funny bits and the hard bits. One of the family can ask the questions, or we can.

We film it properly and edit it into a keepsake film. They get a lovely afternoon of being listened to. The family gets their story, in their own voice, to keep for good.

  • Filmed in our cosy Motherwell studio, set up like a living room, or at home
  • We send questions ahead, so the memories start coming early
  • Delivered on a USB in a keepsake box, with a private link for the family

Studio or at home: choosing what suits them

The studio suits grandparents who enjoy a trip out. It’s calm, warm and quiet, and it feels like a special occasion. The Studio Story is £295 for up to an hour of conversation.

At home suits anyone who doesn’t travel easily, or who talks best in their own chair with their own photos to hand. Home filming is part of the Signature Story, £595, which also allows up to two hours and weaves their old photos into the film.

Not sure? We’ll talk it through on a free story call.

Other experience gifts grandparents enjoy

Not every gift needs to come from us. These are all good, and most are better if you go along too.

i.

Afternoon tea, with the grandchildren

Book a proper afternoon tea and bring the little ones. The point is the company, not the scones.

ii.

A show or a concert

A matinee, a tribute act of the band they loved, or the local pantomime with the whole family. Matinees avoid late nights.

iii.

A trip down memory lane

A day out to the town they grew up in or a place they went on holiday as children. Take a camera and let them lead.

iv.

A gentle day out in Scotland

A garden, a loch-side lunch, a heritage railway or a castle with good paths and a tearoom. Plan it around their pace.

v.

A class they’d never book themselves

Pottery, painting, baking or a whisky tasting. Book two places and go with them.

vi.

A family cooking day

Ask Gran to teach everyone her signature dish. Film it on your phone. You’ll be glad you did.

How to give an experience gift

The trouble with experiences is there’s nothing to unwrap. A few ways round that:

  • Give a printed voucher card in a proper envelope, with a handwritten note about why you chose it.
  • Add something small to open on the day: an old photo in a frame, or a few question cards to get them thinking.
  • Let them choose the date. Our vouchers are valid for 12 months, so there’s no rush.
  • If it’s from the whole family, have everyone sign the card.

Why January and February work well for filming

Christmas is busy, and the weeks after can feel long and quiet for older people. A filming date in January or February gives them something to look forward to, and something to talk about with friends. It also means the film is ready well before spring birthdays, Mother’s Day or Father’s Day.

Questions

Experience gifts for grandparents

What is a good experience gift for grandparents?

One that’s easy for them to enjoy, involves the family, and leaves a memory. Afternoon tea, a show, a day back where they grew up, or a filmed afternoon telling their life story all work well.

Is a life story film suitable for someone in their 80s or 90s?

Yes, and often it means the most at that age. We keep it relaxed, take breaks whenever they want, and can film at home if travelling is hard.

Do you film outside Lanarkshire?

Yes. Our studio is in Motherwell, and we film at home across Glasgow, Edinburgh, the central belt and wider Scotland. Travel outside the central belt is added to the quote.

What if they’re not sure about being filmed?

That’s very common. Most people forget the camera within ten minutes. They can skip any question, and a family member can sit beside them throughout.

How long is the voucher valid?

Twelve months from purchase, by email or as a printed card.

An afternoon they’ll love

Give them the chance to tell their story.
